Tyler's Story

10 year old Tyler Gerdts is a whiz at completing puzzles and word search games.  He’s even perfected a few magic tricks which he enjoys showing off to friends and family. His parents Scott, a self-employed landscaper and Kelley, an elementary school teacher say Tyler has come a long way from the life-threatening medical challenges he’s faced since he was born.

Just a few months after Tyler was born, he was diagnosed with Encephalocele; a rare form of birth defect that causes severe swelling in the brain and affects the overall shape of the head. Tyler has undergone more than a dozen reconstructive surgeries since age five, some in his hometown of Davenport, Iowa and several here in Chattanooga.

Tyler keeps it real for us, too. He gives us the strength to get through until tomorrow when today seems too tough and he does not let us forget how precious life is,” says Kelley Gerdts, Tyler’s Mom.

Tyler’s Mom says during their visits with medical specialists in Chattanooga, they rely on the warm, welcoming and safe atmosphere which Ronald McDonald House provides. Tyler’s other siblings, 14-year old Dylan, 3 year old Cassidy and 2 year old Henry sometimes tag along during Tyler’s scheduled visits for surgery at Children’s Hospital at Erlanger.

According to Kelley Gerdts staying at the Ronald McDonald House has meant relief from undue stress. “Being able to have the family here at the Ronald McDonald House helps us heal.  It also allows our other children to understand what Tyler is going through.”

“We know at 6:00 p.m. or later if we’re hungry, we can come here and eat and not have to worry about how much it’s going to cost,” says Scott Gerdts, Tyler’s Dad.

Tyler’s medical visits is not as frequent now but the family still spends a few days at this “home away from home” during his check-ups.
