“It is a lot easier knowing that you are so close to your child. The kindness and support of the volunteers (Ronald McDonald House), while taking a break from the hospital, was wonderful.”

Burnett thought Mazie had acid reflux symptoms similar to what they experienced with their now 7-year old daughter, Brianna. However just to be sure, they decided to have Mazie examined by doctors at T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital. The next few days were heart-wrenching ones for the family. It turned out that Mazie had a heart murmur and needed surgery. The Grants spent a total of 5 days in the hospital. Since their hospital stay was completely unexpected, the Soddy-Daisy family had just the clothes on their backs. Burnett Grant says the Ronald McDonald Family Room provided his family with necessary toiletries and a daily respite during a very stressful time. “It was a different look and atmosphere. I would go down there 2 or 3 times a day to sleep. It was so peaceful and homey.” Said Burnett Grant, Mazie’s Dad and father of four. Mazie is now 20 months old and has since had additional operations on her heart. The Grants continue to praise the Family Room as a tremendous resource for their family.
