Volunteer Opportunities

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chattanooga volunteers are the heartbeat of our "home away from home." It is thanks to their compassion and dedication to the service of seriously ill children and their families in our community that the "House that love built" has stood strong since 1990. The operational and emotional support offered by our over 800 volunteers brings love into the Ronald McDonald House and Family Room so that the families taking comfort in their services can carry that love back across the street to their children's bedsides.

RMHC has a constant need for volunteers to work 3-hour shifts at the Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald Family Room. Special event volunteers help with fundraising events and other special projects for the organization. Additionally, volunteer groups provide much needed meals for families after a long day at the hospital. Take a look at some of our volunteer opportunities below to learn how you can become a part of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chattanooga's mission.

Ronald McDonald House Shift Volunteers

Adult Volunteers: Volunteers play an important role in the lives of the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House but also play a major role in serving behind the scenes at the House.  Volunteers are often the first face guests see when they enter the House.

They assist with all the basic functions of the House such as answering phones, greeting guests at the door, and helping with light office and household duties as needed. House volunteers are asked to commit to one 3-hour shift per month and to serve as a vital point of contact for families when they have questions or needs.

Ronald McDonald Family Room Shift Volunteers

The Ronald McDonald Family Room is a partnership between RMHC of Greater Chattanooga and Children’s Hospital at Erlanger and hosts more than 21,000 visitors per year.  The Family Room is located inside Children’s Hospital and is staffed entirely by volunteers.  The Family Room is open daily from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. as long as volunteers are available.

Family Room volunteers help to ensure that the families of sick children are well taken care of and made to feel at home while using the Family Room. On a typical volunteer shift, volunteers will help people register at the front desk, tidy up the kitchen, replenish snacks and food and interact with the visitors. Family Room volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of one 3-hour shift per month and are required to complete the Erlanger Volunteer Program requirements.  Volunteers must be 18 or older to work in the Ronald McDonald Family Room.

Ronald McDonald Care Mobile

Volunteering with the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is a unique volunteer opportunity, allowing the volunteers to travel with the Care Mobile to different locations. Volunteers are needed on location with the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile as they travel to area schools. Volunteers may be asked to accompany students to and from their classroom and the Care Mobile to minimize time away from the classroom and to perform light duties as needed. Care Mobile volunteers must attend Erlanger Hospital Volunteer Orientation before traveling with the Care Mobile. If this volunteer opportunity interests you, please call (423) 778-2273.

Adopt-A-Meal

The goal of the Adopt-A-Meal Program is to provide nutritious meals for the residents of the Ronald McDonald House of Chattanooga so that each family can concentrate on their hospitalized child.

Help sustain the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House by providing an evening meal, lunch, or brunch.

Our Adopt-a-Meal volunteer groups are families, churches, school groups, or community organizations, many of whom have been coming for years! These volunteers use the Ronald McDonald House pantry or bring their own supplies to cook for as many as 50 people. The evening meal is served to resident families each day at 6:00 p.m.

Dinner Host

The Dinner Host works with the Adopt-A-Meal group in the evening to make sure they have all the supplies they need, drinks are available, and food is stored properly after the meal. This shift is 5:00-8:00 p.m. and provides great interaction with guests of Ronald McDonald House during the evening meal.
